Hi! I’m Rebecca and I have recently started an internship with Shake Social. I am a media graduate, graduating from Nottingham Trent University with a 2:1 specializing in Popular Culture.
Growing up I was always very interested in the power of the media and the influence it has on everyday life, whether this be conscious or not. I would always annoy my parents reading too much into media texts and asking tons of questions – something i still do now! During my A-levels I was particularly interested in the power of advertising and the way products and services can be marketed.
My course allowed me to focus on analysing texts and forms of popular culture and the ways these are produced by the media and cultural industries. It allowed me to examine the relationship between popular culture forms and social media transformation and explore the different ways in which taste, consumption and identity have been meditated, distributed and regulated.
I’m currently a barista at Costa coffee (everyone loves coffee, right?), however have had some placements in Marketing and communications throughout university that were extremely rewarding and helped me establish my interests further. As well as interning at Shake Social, I am a voluntary media assistant for the Nottingham Lions Hockey Club – I love a game of hockey. I am excited to gain an insight into how social media can help businesses on a professional level while at Shake Social and am keen to learn new things!
Outside of volunteering and work, I love reading and movies with my taste being very broad. I love a good soppy rom-com but at the same time give me a superhero movie any day. I am probably the clumsiest person ever – I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve tripped over my own feet and embarrassed myself in public.
I think social media is great! It’s great for helping people stay connected and is extremely accessible. I find it fascinating how social media can help businesses market themselves. It allows for word of mouth and is an inexpensive way of gaining your brand recognition, with it being a significant platform for networking. As well as this I feel it improves brand loyalty and builds a following. I am enthusiastic to see first hand how Shake Social help their clients and to get stuck into some projects over the next few months.
