Twitter has added over 100 cities to its local trends function to help users find out what’s happening in their area.
Essentially this helps users of the site filter tweets to target their local area. The tool has already been used to coordinate emergency rescue operations after natural disasters and following the 2011 UK riots, it was also used to coordinate citizen tidy-up operations via #riotcleanup.
In a blog post on its website, Twitter said: “We’re bringing Trends to 100 more cities around the world including Istanbul, Frankfurt, Guadalajara and Incheon. With this update, we now surface the ‘most breaking’ news in more than 200 locations”.
Nottingham is one of the cities now added making it easier than ever to find out what is going on. As Twitter says, it is uniquely situated to “capture the pulse of the planet, and the pulse of your city” through Trending Topics.
Nottingham itself has previously been a trending topic on Twitter after the #NottinghamRocks campaign saw it reaching the No.1 spot in the UK and trending at No.3 worldwide.
