Snapchat has made a bold move recently with not one, but two major announcements rolled together into a double header. Firstly, Snapchat’s new product Spectacles are being touted as a sort of accessory/toy/plaything to accompany and assist users taking snaps.
The news has somewhat overshadowed the fact that Snapchat has changed its name officially to Snap Inc., cutting the latter part to distance itself from the messaging side of the app. And let’s face it, the Spectacles are the more innovative of the two ideas.
With a built-in camera these are no ordinary sunglasses, and will set you back around £100 once they hit the market.
Immediately the comparisons have begun with the ill-fated Google Glass venture, which drew criticism for the futuristic design and ridiculous pricing. But these are two points in which the Spectacles excel.
Sleek Fit
The classic style and rather discrete placement of the camera and light on opposite sides of the sunglasses make them barely distinguishable from a pair of Ray-Bans.
And then you could argue that they are starting off at a price even cheaper than most designer sunglasses, which let’s face it, only have the single function of protecting your eyes from glare.
So you have a pair of near-ordinary looking sunglasses with the added benefit of being able to take pictures with them. But not just any pictures – these gadgets produce 30-second long videos so you can post them on the app.
They are already drawing praise for their simplicity and the fact that you can capture moments that you really experienced and watch them over again as if through your eyes once more.
And all this without having to hold some kind of annoying camera, or super long stick, or phone that you’re terrified of dropping.
The accessory is not yet ready for purchase but rumours are circulating about the device, which apparently has a battery life of one day and uses the light on the front to tell others when it’s recording.
Whatever the minor details, we want a pair ASAP so we can get snapping!
