With so many new social networks emerging what seems like every day, it’s hard to keep up– and even to know what’s worth keeping up with. While some new networks may be destined to slide back into oblivion, there’s always a chance that one will be the next Facebook– and if that happens, you won’t want to miss it.
So, as a regular feature, we’ll be reviewing the up-and-comers in the social network sphere, as well as giving our expert prediction on their success. Just remember: if any of them make it big, you heard it here first! This week I’m tackling edgee (styled without a capital letter), a network which has just opened its metaphorical doors to the general public.
What is it?
Branding itself a ‘playground for the curious’, the Berlin-based network is positioning itself as a kind of ‘anti-Twitter,’ where users can create long collages of images and video clips from around the web, curating collections on particular themes and subjects.
The idea behind the network is to enable people to create content on subjects they’re not necessarily experts in– essentially, to collate sources of information on subjects they’re interested in. It’s also a handy workaround for people who just don’t have time to write a blog, or who have more visual preferences.
What isn’t it?
Edgee focuses on collating content from elsewhere on the web, so it’s not an ideal showcase for original content.
How could I use it for my business?
Having said that edgee isn’t ideal for displaying original content, it would be perfectly possible to collage content from your business’ blog. There’s even a dedicated Business and Startups section, where you could upload your useful business content.
There’s a lot of potential for delving into themes related to your business on edgee; businesses specialising in interiors, for example, could find edgee useful for collating ideas related to the history of certain trends or interiors inspiration. Edgee’s user-friendly format is a good way of laying out concepts clearly. Any businesses sharing useful, informative content (not explicit sales messages) would likely be just as popular as non-business users on edgee.
Will it last?
Given its ease of use and how easily edgee lets you feel like an expert in whichever field you’ve chosen, I’d say yes.
Will it integrate with my current social media profiles?
Handily, yes. You’re able to share edgees on Facebook and Twitter to widen their reach– a good way of bringing a new dimension to your presence there, too.
Is there an app?
Not currently, but the developers say it’s in the works.
So, if you’re tempted to try edgee out for yourself, you can sign up here, as well as following them on Facebook and Twitter.
