Twitter

Twitter has announced plans to introduce the ability for its users to upload video straight to the site. Videos will play for six seconds and then the viewer can choose whether to continue watching the video or not, whilst a preview of a second video, related to the one being watched, also begins to play. This stops users from having to upload their videos to YouTube before tweeting them, saving them a lot of time.

Tweetdeck Translation

A Bing tool that translates tweets posted in a foreign language was removed from Twitter last year but returned to Tweetdeck earlier this month. This tool provides a ‘translate tweet’ link to instantly translate it into the user’s native language. According to Twitter, the tool soon disappeared last year as it was only being tested throughout the 2014 FIFA World Cup, but whether it will return to Twitter as well as Tweetdeck is yet to be confirmed.

Facebook trend

Last year there was the Neck Nomination and the Ice Bucket Challenge, now the first Facebook trend of 2015 encourages people to share their very first profile picture, with often embarrassing and hilarious consequences. Just like before users must post their photo to they timeline and then nominate 2 friends to do the same, spreading the embarrassment around the Facebook community. While this trend did not seem to emerge in support of a charity like the Ice Bucket Challenge did, a lot of users are still getting involved.

Tinder acquires Tappy

The dating app, Tinder, which has grown in popularity over the last few years, has recently acquired the photo messaging app, Tappy. Similar to Snapchat, Tappy users send each other photos as a way of communicating, and these photos disappear after a specific amount of time, but Tappy users can also create message threads containing photographs to continue their conversations. Before this, Tinder users could send photos using their ‘Tinder moments’ feature, but this new partnership is expected to improve this service.
