During this past couple of weeks there have been over one hundred million blog posts on the subject of the royal wedding each day. One hundred million a day! That’s a whole lotta bloggin’ going on, and who are we to sidestep a bandwagon, albeit a saturated one?
The success of the royal wedding has been helped in no small part by glorious weather, extended holidays and some good old fashioned pomp, but social media has played a role too and – as a result – William and Kate’s nuptials have dominated the web. From cynical tweets to celebratory updates, YouTube hits to partying pics, and everything in between, it’s fair to say social media currently has blue blood pumping through its veins.
What is surprising about all of this though is who exactly stole the social media show. According to the latest infographic from Webtrends on Mashable, it was the Queen herself, with over a third of all mentions. Dressing head to toe in yellow wasn’t a mistake after all, then. Prince Harry, Pippa Middleton and the Beckhams generated the rest of the buzz with William & Kate barely getting a look in. It seems kissing on a balcony at Buckingham isn’t enough to be a trending topic on Twitter these days, you have to be officially posh and pregnant, or Pippa. Tough times.
Twitter and Facebook aside, even YouTube has been deluged with videos tagged with various wedding-related terms. This past week YouTube has been averaging 460,000 hits a day. Whilst a good chunk of the uploaded clips are from people lucky enough to have been up close and personal in London, the majority of clips have actually come from America. Of the top five countries that created all this social media interest, the US is miles out in front with over half of all hits, tweets, blogs and posts. The UK, Canada, Australia and Indonesia form the rest. Royal wedding fever may have passed the rest of the world by, but with seven million stories relating to the event being posted a day according to Bing, perhaps this doesn’t matter. The Brits may throw a good party, but the Yanks still rule the web!
