There are changes happening with every part of social media at the moment. The biggest news is that Microsoft has finally entered the social networking world with their decision to buy Linkedin, but there are changes to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram too.
The purchase of Linkedin is a move that fits well with Microsoft’s business model. Their biggest source of revenue is the production of software to manage the IT and customer relations for big businesses and this fits with the needs of Linkedin’s 433 million professional users. So expect an expanding service and links between your desktop and your meetings!
You may have noticed for some time that Facebook has been encouraging you to use its new messenger service, but soon you won’t have a choice! Users of the Android and IOS Apps have had to use the service for some time but now users of the mobile service will have to use it too. This is great for Facebook because it reaches more customers through different platforms – people can use its messenger service without having to use Facebook itself. But is it good for users? Facebook says it is 20% faster and has additional benefits like video calling, Gifs and having conversations with businesses – so it depends on whether you think the expansion of Facebook is a good thing!
On Twitter, users can now retweet themselves as many times as they like! With usernames and attachments no longer counting towards the 140 character limit you can now talk about yourself for longer and tweet to more people than ever before.
Users of Instagram may have noticed big changes to the order of their pics. Instagram’s new algorithm means, where previously you would see your feed ordered from old to new, now you will see them in the order that Instagram considers the most important. The change means that Instagram becomes more like Facebook and you may notice more adverts too.
