Ello and Goodbye! – New social media networking platform, Ello, made a huge appearance earlier in the month with over 35,000 per hour at one point. But quickly the site, pitched as the anti-Facebook lost users and now looks likely to dip under.
Snapchat – a hack led to thousands of photos being leaked dubbed ‘the Snappening’, and has now led to Snapchat warning users not to have third party apps in conjunction with Snapchat. “Over the past few days we’ve fielded a number of questions about our API and third-party applications after a website that offered to save Snaps indicated that their database had been breached,” Snapchat said in a statement.
“We are grateful that the service provider acknowledged that Snapchat was never compromised, but we wanted to use this as an opportunity to reiterate the unfortunate threats these third-party applications can pose to our community.”
Facebook and Apple – pay for their female employees to freeze their eggs, in an attempt to lure the very best talent to their companies. Facebook recently introduced this coverage under its surrogacy benefits. Beginning in January, Apple will pick up the tab on bills up to $20,000 for egg-freezing procedures taken by its female employees. This is in addition to Facebook’s $4,000 cash bonus to new parents and Apple’s 18-week paid maternity leave.
Facebook – introduces Safety Check, a new feature that lets your friends know you’re OK in the unlikely event of a disaster. When someone’s within range of an unfolding natural disaster, they’ll get a notification from Facebook prompting them to tap a button to signify that they’re safe, or to say they’re not in the area. Responses will get a high rating in Edgerank so that everyone knows that you’re ok.
Twitter – is now showing you tweets from people you have connected with. Why? Because ‘there are times when you might miss out on tweets we think you’d enjoy’ explains the social network. But are they getting it right and are you seeing the tweets you want to see?
Twitter – has teamed up with SoundCloud and iTunes to play audio in Tweets, bringing a new layer of multimedia to the micro-blogging platform. “With a single tap, the Twitter Audio Card lets you discover and listen to audio directly in your timeline on both iOS and Android devices,” explained Twitter product manager Richard Slatter.
Facebook – new chat app hopes to resurrect the glory days of Microsoft Chat, bringing message boards to the iPhone. Users will be able to use Rooms without having a Facebook account only an email address to re-login if switching between devices.
