Beevolve have conducted an extensive study of over 36 million Twitter users and their findings help us to understand who uses Twitter and how to use the site best.

The most significant finding in the study was the fact that people with more followers tweet more. Simply put more tweets = more followers, and vice versa. This shows that content is paramount on Twitter and that what you tweet matters.

Activity breeds activity and active Twitter users who tweet engaging, useful content gain more followers and, if they are a business, reach a wider audience.

The study shows us that the majority of Twitter users are also pretty selective about who they follow. Most users only follow around 50 people. The average Twitter user follows 102 people and has 208 followers:

A business needs to make sure their content is significant and engaging enough to make it into people’s follow list. Many people on Twitter are there for the conversation and to have contact with real people. What the Beevolve study shows is that the majority of Twitter users are there to connect and network with people they know or share a common interest with. As a business your customers have a common interest with you and your product and so with the right mix of tweets you can widen your customer base.

The Beevolve study has uncovered many interesting things about Twitter that can be used to help you navigate the social media site. Take a look at the full study here
