Who would have thought the most watched Facebook Live video stream would be a lady from Texas in a Chewbacca mask?
Yep – we couldn’t believe it either. Since Facebook Live launched in the Spring, many users and broadcasters have been streaming videos, showing exercise routines or red carpet events for example. However, Over 30 million people this weekend took to the internet to watch a video of Candace Payne, a mother from Texas, unwrapping and trying on a Chewbacca mask. Now we understand that doesn’t sound like the most entertaining video, but we promise you this “Happy Chewbacca” will get you laughing.
The video sees Payne unwrapping some unknown Star Wars merchandise to reveal a Chewbacca mask. For anyone who hasn’t seen Star Wars, Chewbacca is a Wookie and Han Solo’s partner (pilot of the Millennium Falcon space ship). Chewbacca communicates through only strange noises, resembling a roar or a moan. Once Payne has revealed this Chewbacca mask and tries it on, she cannot stop laughing.
In an interview on Saturday, Payne is said to have heard from all types of people, some with depression and anxiety, thanking her for her uplifting video and bringing them happiness. She stated that seeing herself on her phone screen as Chewbacca when she was recording the video sent her into fits of laughter, which in return gave viewers several minutes of the laughing Wookie. This “Happy Chewbacca” video shows Candace’s enthusiastic, infectious laughter and genuine excitement about having bought this mask.
Payne said she simply just recorded this video of her in her car to let her young children know that this was a present for her, not for them and did not expect for it to go viral, or to even entertain anyone. The video ends with Payne laughing saying “That is the best birthday present ever to myself. Wow!” Payne is said to appreciate the fact that Chewbacca can express emotions with minimal dialogue, and finally feels like “Chewie” has got his happiness back from his devastating loss in the most recent Star Wars film “The Force Awakens.” Awww.

Viewers took to Twitter to express their love for this video – a nice example of cross channel seeding if ever there was one!
And the takeaway message? Never underestimate the feel-good factor or the value of a bit of silliness!
